Softball knocks off Westlake to grab spot in Division 2 final

The Villa Park softball

The Villa Park softball team continued their historic run by beating Westla by a be-4 goal in the CIF-SS Division 2 semifinals at Villa Park High.

Villa Park Holland will play for the championship on 18 or 19 June Sp 199 The Spartans have not reached a CIF Championship game since.

When I got a job here, other coaches in the area told me I could never change things, said Villa Park coach Terry Williams. They lost a lot one by one. You got it. Now, we are one of the best teams in the county This is proof to these kids and how hard they have worked.

Thursday’s game was not the somewhat expected pitching dual. The future two Pack-12 launchers were in the circle. Kylie Chung of Westlock is a Stanford signer and Sidney Somendike of Villa Park is involved in Arizona.

Somarendic was great for the Sportans, pitching a full game with 15 strikeouts.

We’ve walked headlong into the travel ball several times and the series is pretty split, says Somendike about Chung. He turns me on. My goal was to chase these hitters, cut the ball as hard as possible and it turned out pretty well.

Chung and Shayna Lazar match for a no-hitter against Grand Terrace in the quarterfinals. Five-foot-1 senior Andrea Flores moved away from the left-field wall early to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead and give them some confidence.

“He gave our kids confidence that they could hit the ball,” Williams said of Flores ’home run. They heard that he was really good and then our little boy came and hit him over the fence on the left field and thought, if he can do it, we can all do it.

Villa Park added three runs in the second innings. There was a wild pitch as the bases were loaded and Mika Jones scored. After collecting the run, Jordan Lahan loosened Westlock’s defense and stole the plate. After two innings, Mikayala Maher got a walk to keep the Spartans ahead 4-1.

In the fourth inning, Maher walked alone with Sonardi. Rila Sandwig hit a two-run single to give Villa Park a 2-2 victory. He later scored on a pass to extend the lead to five runs.

Westall was threatened in the seventh and scored two runs when a Villa Park defender missed a fly ball in the sun, but Somarendike came out of the jam to end the game.

Emily Jones scored two runs for the Warriors.

Caitlin Bertlow played three perfect relief innings for Westlock with four strikeouts.

Williams said he is very familiar with Upland and has seen the Highlanders play personally this season. Oregon State signatories Sarah Hendezes and Notre Dame Paise Cowley in Upland have pledged what more fights there will be between the five pitchers of College-Caliber Power.

We didn’t break. “We’ve faced first-class calls in this division throughout the playoffs,” Williams said.

That was the goal for us year-round, Somenike said. We want to get a ring and I think we have the tools to do it.
