Five takeaways from IHSAA reclassification for 2021 high school football, basketball

The Indiana High School Athletic Association approved next year’s section assignments for boys and girls basketball, soccer, soccer and volleyball on Monday.

Last month, the IHSAA Executive Committee decided to freeze registration for the current performance cycle for another year after showing significant fluctuations likely due to a pandemic. As a result, all schools will remain in the same current ranking for each sport for another year, except for schools that meet the criteria for tournament success factors. Those schools go up and down and remain the same.

Here are five points from the section assignments:

It’s no wonder the Soccer Bishop Chatterd moves to Section 22

Bishop Chattered was promoted to 4A for the first time since 2013 and 2014 due to tournament success factors after winning consecutive Class 3A state titles in 2019 and 2020. Ronkari.

Chatterd defeated Roncarli in the section title in 2013, then lost to Roncarri in section ’14 and returned to 3A. Other schools in Section 22 of the eight teams are Beech Grove, Frankfort, Chris Pass Attack, Short Ridge, Lebanon and Western.

3 section team soccer field

It was interesting that IHSAA decided not to replace the team that was sent off due to the success of the tournament or the integration factor. That is, Class 6A has two 3-team section fields.

In Section 3, Fort Wayne Snyder returns to 5A and the three sections of the team are Carol (Fort Wayne), Homestead and Warsaw. Columbus East also returned to 5A, leaving Center Grove, Columbus North and Franklin Central in Section 8. By the way, Columbus East returns to Section 14 of 5A with Franklin, New Palace Teen and Whiteland.

Due to the frozen registration, Carmel Soccer will remain in Section 5 with Avon, Brownsburg and Pike, and will remain in the southern half of Group 6A for another year.

A small change in men’s basketball
Due to the pandemic, the men’s basketball tournament was not held in 2019-20, so the team will not be promoted. The only major change was the integration of Hammond (Hammond Central and Hammond Morton are now in School 4A and Section 1). This has moved Merrillville from Section 1 to Section 2.

More movement in other sports

In women’s basketball, Lynton-Stockton will be promoted to Class 3A and Section 31 due to tournament success factors. Central Noble (Section 36) and Winchester (Section 39) will return to 2A, while Pioneer (Section 37) and Lugti (Section 47) will return from Class A to 2A. Marquette Catholic (Section 49) and Vinsen’s Rivets (Section 63) are ranked 2A to A in women’s basketball.

In volleyball, Heritage Christian (Section 27) has been promoted to Class 3A due to tournament success factors. Park Tudor (Section 26) has moved from Class A to 2A in Women’s Soccer.
